Kindergarten Writing Skills. In kindergarten, your child begins to truly grow as a writer. Kindergartners start to write words (often using their own creative or invented spellings), and may even write their own mini books and stories about their lives or what they’ve learned. Last fall, This Reading Mama and I teamed up to share a series of simple first and second grade writing lessons.

We’re back – and this time we’re sharing ten preschool and kindergarten writing lessons. No, I’m not talking about handwriting practice – I’m talking about teaching children to put their ideas onto paper.

And it’s going. The books listed below are best for use with Kindergarten, first, or second grade. The ones that are most appropriate for Kindergarten are *starred* (not to say that any of the books would be inappropriate for Kindergarten, but having taught this grade, I know that some books are a little too long for the little ones!).

After finishing the lesson, students will be able to create their own first book using the sight words ("I," "See," "The"). Students will be able to read their books aloud to an adult or peer.
